Musical Instrument From West Sumatra

Indonesia has many cultural and linguistic arts. Not forgetting that accompanying is have  very diverse taste. One of the results of the existing culture in Indonesia is reflected from the number of local music instruments.

This time we will discuss some musical instruments from west Sumatra area. With the culture still inherent, many ceremonial activities still use this instrument to accompany either to accompany the dance or parade ceremony.

1. Musical Instrument Tabuik Drums
Tabuik drum is a musical instrument that comes from West Sumatra, especially in the area Pariaman. Tabuik drums played in groups and became a source of excitement during the Oyak Tabuik event. Musical Instrument Tabuik Drum Is a Source of Joy in the Traditional Event Tabuik -Sumatera Barat.

Tabuik Drums until now the most commonly found in the Maninjau region and Padang Pariaman area. The Tabuik Drums is closely related to the ritual or adat ceremony in the Maninjau and Padang Pariaman communities, as in the Maninjau community that the tabuik drums is also called  Ketipit Drums which is played in the form of ensemble of music which is almost always used in traditional ceremonies such as in weddings and events Other crowds. On the other hand, the community of Padang Pariaman is very closely related to the culture of the local community.

As in Tabuik ritual ceremonies held every 1 to 10 Muharam every year and other ritual ceremonies, that tabuik drums can not be abandoned and even has become an absolute requirement in a ritual ceremony, even the existence of the drums as a musical instrument has been part Important in the structure of the Tabuik ceremonial chain.



 

2. Saluang Musical Instrument

Saluang is a typical traditional musical instrument  of Minangkabau, West Sumatra. The instrument is made of thin bamboo or talang (Schizostachyum brachycladum Kurz). Minangkabau people believe that the best material to make saluang comes from the gutters for clothes or cloth gutters found float in the river. Saluang has a diameter of about 3-4 cm, length 40-60 cm and only has 4 holes. This traditional Saluang instrument is played by blowing.

The virtue of these saluang players is that they can play saluang by blowing and breathing together, so the saluang blower can play the instrument from the beginning of the end of the song without breaking. This way of breathing is developed with continuous practice. This technique is also called the technique of manyisiahan angok (put aside the breath).


3. Talempong Musical Instruments

Talempong is a traditional musical instrument of the Minangkabau tribe. The shape is almost the same as the bonang instruments in the gamelan Instrument set. Talempong can be made of brass, but some are made of wood and stone. Currently talempong made of brass is more widely used.

Talempong is usually played to accompany dance performances or greetings, such as the typical Dance such Pasambahan Dance, and Galombang Dance. In Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, Talempong is known as Caklempong. Negeri Sembilan has been visited by Minangkabau tribes who migrated from West Sumatra in the 15th century AD and the only state in Malaysia that practice Lareh Bodi Caniago system.
